JONBONAE Chung, an 11-year-old Jamaican, is the Turks and Caicos Island's top student for 2010.
Chung, a student of Precious Treasures Pre-School and Primary got the highest grades in the island's Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) this year and has won herself a scholarship from LIME, TCI valued at US$55,000 for the five years she will be attending British West Indies Collegiate.
Her average for Mathematics, English Language, Science and General Paper was 89.13 per cent.
GSAT in the TCI is different from the Jamaican GSAT. There, students sit two papers for some subjects, one of which is multiple choice and the other, short answer.
Chung was born in Buff Bay, Portland, but migrated at age eight with her family. Since then she has been attending Precious Treasures Pre-school and Primary, an institution which was founded by two Jamaicans, the Honorary Consul of Jamaica to the TCI, Allan Hutchinson and his wife, Yvonne, the principal.
"It feels great!" says Chung, whose hobbies are reading, writing, singing, dancing and surfing the internet.
When asked how she felt about her daughter's accomplishment, Michelle Chung said, "I'm so happy that she did her very best and we're really happy with the results".
"Whatever her dreams are I will direct them. Whatever her dreams are I will support them. We encouraged her to study, study, study. We tried to motivate her and we prayed. We told her whatever the results are, as long as she did her best, we [would be] proud."
The pre-teen said she did study hard, remained focus, paid much attention in class and practiced on the web-based resource centre Caribbeanexams.com.
She is excited about her new school and is eager to join the science and debating clubs there.
She aspires to become a scientist and will begin working on completing the foundation of this in her new school.
Principal of Precious Treasures, Yvonne Hutchinson said all 14 of her students who sat the exams this year, passed. The 100 per cent pass rate, she said, has been consistent for the last six years. The school has a population of 170 students.
The student who placed seventh in the island is also from precious Treasures. Her name is Shadae Williams. The other top performers in the island are Sasha Arthur, Daphne Zaguirre, Herkeema Adams, Cristacha Cesaire, Modlin Orange, Tzar Brodber, Cassie Khan and Jody-Ann Pratt.

An exciting and innovative new pilot program has been launched to help the children of the Caribbean become all they can be as future adults and citizens of the world. The program, called Caribbeanexams.com is based on children using their computers to take exams preparing them for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE), Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), the Grade Nine Achievement Test (GNAT), and the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT). The goal is to give students a tool to use at their own pace and for their own individual needs.
Here in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the program has been specifically designed to help students grades 4 to 6 prepare for GSAT exams. The program prepares students in areas such as Math, English Language, and Science. PUPILS in Downtown Providenciales will be better prepared for their exams thanks to a donation from the country's only indigenous bank.
TCI Bank Limited has partnered with New Age Academy and CaribbeanExams.com to assist students with their CSEC examination preparations.
The CaribbeanExams.com programme offers comprehensive examination preparation to students preparing for the GSAT, CSEC and CAPE exams.
Along with a database of practice questions in 13 subject areas, pupils will be given access to a personalised help desk, teacher monitored chat-rooms and homework assistance.
CaribbeanExams will also ensure that the school is fully set up and trained to use the system.

Graceway IGA Helps To Prepare Turks and Caicos Students for CXC/CSEC

Providenciales Turks and Caicos: Turks and Caicos students are finding it easier to prepare for their CXC exams, thanks to a joint venture initiative between the Graceway IGA group and the Ministry of Education.
The joint venture programme funded by the Graceway IGA group begins mid February and will serve fourth and fifth form Clement Howell High school students. The students will be able to gain access to the CaribbeanExams unique online examination coaching services for a one-year period to better prepare them for their CXC/CSEC exams. A six week pilot of the programme involving 20 students will start on February 20th 2008 and will run until the end of March. The Ministry of Education will subsequently review the success of the pilot to determine its wider application in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The Graceway IGA Group is sponsoring the inaugural year of the CaribbeanExams programme available to the students of the Clement Howell High School. Edith Cox, Vice President of Graceway IGA stated at the launch event earlier today: "The project offers an opportunity for developing and educating the minds of today's youth in a bid to maximize their learning potential." She further stated that the "Graceway IGA group is one of the most active supporters of youth and education in the TCI; for nearly ten years it has supported youth sports, community and education through a wide range of programmes".
The joint venture with the Ministry of Education adds to the list of education sponsored programs that the Graceway IGA is involved in, most notably their ongoing scholarship program at the British West Indies Collegiate where dedicated students requiring financial assistance for their education have the opportunity to apply for a full scholarship of their senior education.
Shalette East, Vice President-Operations of CaribbeanExams explained how the programme will work.
Students will have access to practice material in eleven subject areas with particular focus on Mathematics and Biology. They will be able to take full practice tests and will have the opportunity to draw on material for specific topics. Additionally, students will have access to a 24 hr online Help Desk where they can communicate queries relating to their studies directly with teachers and experienced examiners. They will also have access to a Chatroom where they can speak with a live tutor and other local and international students from other Caribbean regions.
After the initial pilot period, Clement Howell High will continue to have access to the system for one full year. Teachers and parents can also keep track of students' grades and progress through a special facility called a 'Grade-book' system. Students participating in the programme will have to complete a learner characteristic survey, while teachers will complete a survey which is geared toward the improvement they have noticed in the students during the programme.

Fort Lauderdale USA: 21 year-old Rochelle Morrison, recipient of the Jamaican Prime Ministers Youth Award for Academic Excellence in 2006, will appear on Caribbeanexams.com on January 22, 2007 between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Rochelle graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School in 2003 with eight distinctions (grade 1) in the CSEC examination including Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Spanish as well as Additional Mathematics for which she scored a grade A. For CAPE, Rochelle earned grade 1 in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. She was awarded the CSEC and CAPE National Council Awards for Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
Extra-curricular activities played an important role in Rochelles high-school life and helped to develop her inter-personal and leadership skills, as among other things, she participated in chorale speaking, dancing, swimming, netball, Schools Challenge Quiz, piano and Missionary Youth Club. Rochelle was a Prefect and Deputy Head Girl at Immaculate Conception High School and was the Valedictorian for her graduating class in 2001.
She was actively involved in many aspects of university life, holding positions on her Hall Committee Trinity Hall at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad. She also held positions in the Interact Club and was Director of International Understanding, Secretary of the Inter-School Christian Fellowship and Treasurer of the Missionary Youth Fellowship.
She was awarded Best Student in Level 1 Chemical and Process Engineering for the Academic Year 2003 2004 and the H.J. Fenton Memorial Scholarship for Chemical Engineering from Petrojam Ltd. (2003 2006). In 2006, she earned the Jamaica Institute of Engineers Award for Outstanding Final Year Student.

FORT LAUDERDALE, USA: A group of Caribbean post-graduate students have launched an online website, that will give Caribbean schoolchildren access to more than 4,000 practice questions.
The student training system found at www.caribbeanexams.com features full-length, timed, computer-adaptive tests whose delivery simulates that of the actual exam. It includes resources for parents, practice questions, answers, and explanations (via an online help desk), as well as a comprehensive Language Arts review section.
The website provides resources to enhance the preparation process for the following examinations:
- Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CXC/CSEC),
- Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE),
- General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCE/GCSE),
- Guyana National Third Form Examination (NTFE),
- Dominica Junior Secondary Programme (JSP),
- Grade Level Assessment Test (GLAT),
- Bahamas Junior Certificate Examination (BJC),
- Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE),

After a student takes a practice test, they receive their scores instantly. They are able to review each of the test questions to see which items they missed. The site also features a real-time online grade book that identifies the student's weaknesses and strengths, allowing them to focus on the areas that most need improvement.
The website's exclusive examination techniques will show students super speed methods to get through the questions they know with ease, saving them time so they can concentrate on the hardest questions without rushing. Students will also:
- Learn to avoid procrastination.
- Learn to tell the difference between right answers and clever-sounding traps.
- Learn the secret to using contextual clues to make important distinctions between right and wrong answer choices.
"We are very excited to provide Caribbean students with this opportunity to improve their chances on their examinations," said Shalette Ashman-East, who spearheaded the project.
Technological infrastructure for the system is provided by the Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science, an educational research institute based in South Florida.
"We've undergone many months of pilot testing, and we're delighted with the response now that it is widely available," Ashman-East said.
